General
Disclaimer: If you are a JOUR, FITV, DTEM or COMC major, you are not required to complete an internship for credit. However, you can get credit for an internship if you want.
Requirements: Only juniors or seniors can intern for credit during the school year. Any student may intern for credit during the summer. Even if your internship is paid, you can still get credit for it if you meet the above requirements.
Option #1 (Full Course Credit)
Students can take the 4 credit Internship Seminar course (COMM 4701) to get a full course credit for their internship. Students can take it on either campus. Internship Seminar is offered at RH in the Fall and at LC in the Spring.
Option #2 (1-point Tutorial)
Students who do not want to take the Internship Seminar but need to get credit for the internship may take a 1-point Tutorial for credit. This is not a full course and does not count toward your major progress, but does count towards the 124 credits needed for graduation. Please contact the Associate Chair, Professor Clark (djeclark@fordham.edu) and Professor Kamin (dkamin@fordham.edu), who handles the 1-credit tutorials, for more information. Students must have a 3.0 GPA + junior status to pursue a one-credit tutorial.
Option #3: (Affordable Summer Term)
As of Fall 2018 there is a new 0.5 credit option (INDP 4999) at FCRH for summer internships to try to lower the cost. Associate Dean Rachel Annunziato (annunziato@fordham.edu) must be the professor for this Tutorial option. They are working on a free summer internship option, but it is not yet available.
For this option, Tutorial registration forms need to be approved by your class dean and submitted to the Summer Session office (fordham.edu/summer) at Keating Hall 315 by the Add/Drop deadline of the summer session in which you would like to be registered.
Consult the CMS website to make sure you are familiar with the different major and minor options. Then, please contact the Associate Chair, Professor Clark (djeclark@fordham.edu) and the Assistant to the Associate Chair, Marie Trombetta (mtrombetta2@fordham.edu), to declare your major intention.

You will need your FIDN, New Major, and Concentration.
Seniors must take an EP4 in order to graduate.
As such, most EP4 courses will be full by the time juniors or lower can register. In addition, many EP4 courses also hold the “Senior Values Seminar” attribute.
Students are not “blocked” from registering for all EP4s, but the likelihood they will be able to get into one is low. If the EP4 holds the “Senior Values Seminar” attribute, then it will be closed to non-seniors. In addition, there may be complications if a senior needs to get into an EP4 and there are non-seniors in a full class.
A student has to take four classes in order to have one be P/F. If they are only doing three, they can’t do one P/F.
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are allowed to register for one elective course per year on a Pass/Fail basis. Credit will be granted for a passing grade, and no credit awarded for a failing grade. Since there is no numerical equivalent, the grade is not computed in the student’s GPA index. No courses used to fulfill a core, major, or minor program requirement may be taken on a P/F basis. A student has to take four classes in order to have one be P/F. If they are only taking three, they can’t take one P/F.
Students may double count COMM 1000 plus 2 more courses in different majors (a total of 3 max).
Students may double count COMM 1000 plus one more course for a major and a minor (a total of 2 max).
Students may not count one class for multiple requirements within the same major.

To be able to register for classes every semester, students must get their holds lifted by their advisors.
To find out who your advisor is, check DegreeWorks. Your advisor’s name will be on the top right of the page. DegreeWorks is found under the Student tab in your student portal, towards the bottom.
To determine which day you register for classes, refer to your Earned Credits on the top left of the page.
Before meeting with their advisor, students must prep the following:
- A tentative schedule (or classes you’re deciding between). Include the course designator, course number, name of each class, and the course CRN (i.e. DTEM 1401 Intro to DTEM, CRN 30209). Make sure to have backups or several schedule options if you are a freshman, sophomore, or junior, as classes tend to fill up before your turn during registration! Students are highly encouraged to fill out this schedule template for their advising meeting.
- Reason for taking those classes (Core Curriculum requirement? Major or Minor requirement? Elective?)
- Screengrab of your Degreeworks progress (you may select Print at the top of the page and Save as PDF)
- Do your best to know if you need extra credits, plan on doing summer classes, and share any majors/minors you are pursuing but have not officially declared. This information will ensure your meeting is most effective.
It is extremely helpful for students to keep track of what they want each course to count for as it pertains to Attributes and Core/Major/Minor Requirements. DegreeWorks may count courses incorrectly or not in the way the student intended and this can be changed with an override.
If students are finished with or progressing quickly through their major, we encourage them to browse other courses in the CMS Department outside of their major – they can often be really interesting, relevant, and might open new doors for exploration!

Yes! Students interested in study abroad must contact Lewis Freeman (lefreeman@fordham.edu). He decides how courses taken abroad will slot into our majors and minors.
Remember: students abroad are allowed to register for classes early. We encourage students to make the most of this huge advantage!
Students need 12 credits each semester to maintain full-time student status. This is important because they can lose financial aid and residential space in dorms if they are not full-time students.
Students have the opportunity to lower their financial obligations if they can finish a semester early, or attend part-time during their last semester, so some students choose to weigh out these options depending on their specific situation.
Students generally take five courses per semester their first (Freshman) and second (Sophomore) years. Students generally take four courses per semester their third (Junior) and fourth (Senior) years.
Students are charged extra (tuition) if they go over 18 credits per semester, unless they have a GPA of 3.7 or above.
These outstanding students are allowed to take a fifth course for free in junior or senior years, when they would normally take four classes.
The approval of a class dean is necessary to enroll students who are going over 18 credits.

All Fordham College students must take their Core courses at their home college. Dean’s approval is required to take a Core Curriculum course outside a student’s home campus and they do not often grant it.

Students can take any course that is not counting for their Core Curriculum outside their home campus. Students at FCLC and FCRH are free to take their courses for CMS majors or minors at either campus.
Students must meet with the senior dean on their campus to determine if they can graduate early.
Before doing so, make sure you have completed at least 36 courses, earned a minimum of 124 credits, and have fully completed the Core Curriculum, along with your major(s)/minor(s) curriculum.
Deans are assigned based on academic class (i.e. Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior).

To declare their major concentration, students must fill out the Major Declaration Form available at the CMS Department office, specifying the concentration in the designated box.
Students may declare their majors without a concentration if they are unsure which path they want to take and simply declare the concentration at a later time.
Students may also change their concentration at any time by filling out the Major Declaration Form, specifying a concentration change.
Concentrations take some time to process and are occasionally processed incorrectly by Fordham. Students are encouraged to check their DegreeWorks to make sure the changes made are correct.
Note: There are no concentrations for DTEM or Journalism majors.

The CMS Department office at Lincoln Center is located on the 7th floor of Martino Hall.
Martino Hall can be found at 45 Columbus Ave (across the street from the Lincoln Center campus, between 61st and 62nd streets).

Students may have up to two majors and up to two minors.

Students with majors in the Communication and Media Studies department (including NMDD) can take up to two courses in the college of Professional and Continuing Studies towards their majors in CMS.
These courses usually require a PCS dean to admit the student to the course with an override.
DTEM
Yes, DTEM 1401 (Intro to Digital Technologies and Emerging Media) is a prerequisite for DTEM 1402 (Digital Cultures).
However, if this presents major scheduling issues and a conflict for you, please see your advisor as exceptions have been made.

FITV
Students pursuing the Film and Television (FITV) major are required to declare a concentration in either film or television.
This does not mean students will not be able to take courses in both – they can and are encouraged to! FITV concentrations require students to complete three concentration courses for the path they choose.
FITV minors are required to complete two of these concentration courses.
